In a deeply tragic incident, a 14-year-old boy from Mumbai’s Bhandup area took his own life after being asked by his mother to study. The boy, a Class 9 student, was found hanging in his room at Runwal Greens, a residential complex, on the night of December 14.
According to police reports, the boy used a nylon rope to hang himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom. The incident was discovered around 10:15 p.m. when his mother opened the bedroom door and found him unresponsive. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Hospital authorities subsequently informed the police, and an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed at the Bhandup Police Station.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Academic Stress
Senior police officials revealed that initial inquiries suggest the boy might have been under significant academic stress. Sources indicate that the boy’s mother, a homemaker, had asked him to concentrate on his studies before the incident. While further investigations are underway, the tragic event has highlighted the mental health challenges faced by students due to academic expectations.
The boy’s father, a businessman, and his mother are reportedly devastated. Friends and neighbors described the teenager as bright and well-mannered.

This heartbreaking case is not an isolated incident. Recent studies indicate an alarming rise in student suicides across India, with academic pressure often cited as a leading cause. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India reported over 13,000 student suicides in 2021, averaging more than 35 per day. Academic achievement should not come at the cost of mental well-being.”
The Bhandup police are now investigating whether additional stressors may have contributed to this tragedy. They have urged residents to be vigilant and report any signs of distress in young individuals.
