Google Makes Waves with $2.7 Billion ‘Reverse Acqui-Hire’ of AI Pioneer Noam Shazeer

Tech Giant Rehires Former Employee Amid Competitive AI Landscape

In a strategic move signaling its unwavering commitment to dominating the artificial intelligence sector, Google has reportedly spent $2.7 billion to bring back renowned AI engineer Noam Shazeer. Shazeer, who left Google in frustration in 2021, rejoined the tech giant through a unique arrangement termed a “reverse acqui-hire.” This allows Google to license Shazeer’s groundbreaking technology without undergoing a full acquisition, thus effectively sidestepping potential regulatory hurdles .

Shazeer is best known for co-authoring the influential 2017 research paper “Attention is All You Need,” a foundational work for many AI tools today. His departure followed the controversial shelving of his innovative chatbot project, Meena. Subsequently, Shazeer and colleague Daniel De Freitas launched Character.ai, which quickly gained traction but faced financial challenges .

Now back at Google, Shazeer is set to play a pivotal role in the development of Gemini, the company’s flagship AI project. His return underscores Google’s focus on securing top talent amid an increasingly competitive landscape, raising important questions about the implications for smaller tech firms as major players continue to consolidate expertise .

As the AI race heats up, Google’s move not only showcases its willingness to invest heavily in talent acquisition but also highlights the ongoing power dynamics in the tech industry .
