In a significant political development, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi alleged that she was denied the opportunity to meet climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was detained on Monday night at the Singhu border. Wangchuk, known for his advocacy for environmental issues and educational reforms, was apprehended while attempting to enter the national capital with approximately 150 supporters.
Atishi arrived at the Bawana Police Station on Tuesday, stating her intention to meet Wangchuk, but reported that police officials prevented her from doing so. Speaking to reporters, she expressed her dismay, saying, “I came here to meet Sonam Wangchuk. He is an environmentalist and educationist. Everybody knows him. He was coming to Delhi from Ladakh to raise his voice. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government arrested him from the Delhi border.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the people of Ladakh are seeking their democratic rights and do not want to live under Lieutenant Governor (LG) leadership. Despite being permitted to enter the police station, she claimed, “I was not allowed to meet him.”
Earlier reports indicated that Atishi faced obstruction from police officers when she attempted to access the station. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), of which she is a member, reiterated her allegations of governmental suppression. Atishi criticized the central government, stating, “Today, the central government of the Bharatiya Janata Party leaves no stone unturned in killing democracy, snatching the right to vote. Why were they arrested? Why am I being stopped from meeting them? Because the Bharatiya Janata Party is afraid of democracy.”
She concluded with a bold assertion regarding the future of governance in Ladakh and Delhi, stating, “If such dictatorship of the Bharatiya Janata Party continues, the LG rule will end in Ladakh, the LG rule will end in Delhi, and the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party will end in the central government here as well.”
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the AAP-led Delhi government and the central government, particularly concerning issues of democratic rights and governance in the region.
