Himachal Pradesh Introduces Toilet Seat Tax: Because Why Not?

Shimla: In a move that’s bound to flush away your worries, the cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh government has decided to tax residents on their toilet seats. Yes, you read that right! Under the astute leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, residents will now pay a monthly fee of ₹25 for every toilet seat in urban areas. Apparently, using a toilet has never been this taxing—literally.

The government’s new notification adds an interesting twist to the sewerage bill, which will now be a delightful 30% of your water bill. But wait, there’s more! If you’re brave enough to use your own water source (because who wouldn’t want to pay extra?), that same ₹25 per toilet seat will also apply. It’s almost as if they’re trying to turn your home into a modern-day tax museum, one toilet at a time.

And here’s the kicker: this is the first time that water bills are being issued in Himachal Pradesh, after the BJP’s promise of free water to win your hearts. The Sukhu government must be convinced that urban residents are secretly running a bathroom empire, given their insistence on taxing what should be a basic necessity.

With five municipal corporations, 29 municipalities, and 17 Nagar Panchayats housing about 10 lakh people, this new tax is bound to stir up some… lively discussions at dinner tables across the state. After all, nothing says “good governance” quite like taxing your way to financial stability. So, citizens of Himachal, prepare your wallets—your toilets are about to become a lot more expensive!
