Cyclone Dana: Odisha and Bengal Prepare for Landfall on October 25 with Evacuations and Train Cancellations

As Cyclone Dana approaches the eastern coast of India, both Odisha and West Bengal are bracing for its impact. The cyclone is expected to make landfall in the early hours of October 25, bringing wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, along with heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

Preparations Underway

Both states have initiated large-scale evacuations to protect vulnerable populations. The Odisha government plans to move over 1 million people from 3,000 villages across 14 districts to relief camps. West Bengal has also started moving people to safer locations, with schools and other educational institutions closing in the most affected areas.

In Odisha, districts like Puri, Balasore, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur are on high alert. West Bengal’s South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, and other coastal areas are also expected to bear the brunt of the storm.

Train Services Disrupted

East Coast Railways has canceled 198 trains, including major routes like the Bhubaneswar-Rameswaram Superfast Express and the Howrah-Puri Shatabdi Express. In total, more than 150 express and passenger trains have been suspended as a precautionary measure.

Relief Efforts

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged local MLAs to assist in rescue and relief operations. The government has set up over 5,000 relief centers equipped with essential supplies such as water, food, and medical services. Pregnant women and other vulnerable groups are being shifted to hospitals to ensure they receive timely care during the storm.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that schools in seven districts would remain closed from October 23 to 26 as a safety measure. The Indian Coast Guard is also on high alert, mobilizing vessels and aircraft for potential rescue operations.

Weather Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for both states, forecasting torrential rain and high winds along the coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from October 23 to 25, as wind speeds could reach up to 60 kmph and increase further as the cyclone intensifies.

As the eastern coast prepares for Cyclone Dana’s arrival, both Odisha and West Bengal are taking all necessary precautions to minimize damage and ensure the safety of their residents.
