BJP Likely to Elect New President by February 2025: Sources

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to get a new national president by February 2025, replacing the incumbent JP Nadda, according to senior party sources. The ongoing organisational elections are reportedly progressing smoothly, with polling expected to conclude in over half of the party’s state units by mid-January.

Organisational Elections on Track

The BJP’s internal election process, as outlined in its constitution, begins at the grassroots level. Elections for local committees are followed by mandal, district, regional, and state committees. Once polling is complete in at least half of the states, the stage is set for the election of the national president.

A senior party functionary informed PTI, “We expect that a new BJP president will assume charge by the end of February.”

The leader also noted that the new chief could emerge from within the government or the organisational ranks, though no final decision has been made.

JP Nadda’s Tenure and Leadership

JP Nadda, who took over as BJP’s national president from Amit Shah in February 2020, received an extension beyond his three-year term in light of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Under his leadership, the BJP-led NDA secured its third consecutive term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stewardship.

Nadda, who also serves as the Union Health Minister, played a critical role in steering the party’s campaigns across multiple states during his extended tenure.

State Units and Leadership Transition

With terms of nearly 60% of BJP’s state unit presidents having ended, their replacements are likely to be finalised by mid-January. This transition will pave the way for the culmination of the organisational exercise at the national level.

The process, expected to span about two months, will conclude with the election of a full-time party president who will then nominate their team of office-bearers.

Why It Matters

The election of a new BJP president comes at a critical juncture as the party gears up for upcoming state assembly elections and prepares to solidify its leadership ahead of the next political cycle.

While speculation continues about the identity of the next chief, the BJP’s ability to balance organisational strength and political leadership will remain a focal point in the coming months.
