On his final day as Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud delivered a heartfelt farewell speech, reflecting on his judicial journey and expressing gratitude to the legal community. Speaking from the Ceremonial Bench on Friday, he humbly asked for “forgiveness” if he had “ever hurt anyone” during his tenure. Chief Justice Chandrachud also conveyed his deep sense of commitment, noting his desire to hear “as many matters as possible” up to his last working day.
Acknowledging the gravity and uniqueness of each case, he thanked those present, remarking on the “humbling” experience of seeing so many attendees for his farewell. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2016 and serving as CJI since November 2022, he will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whom he praised for his “stability, dignity, and strength.”
CJI Chandrachud’s career has been marked by key judgments in areas such as personal liberty, LGBTQ+ rights, and privacy, establishing a legacy that many regard as pivotal in shaping modern Indian jurisprudence.
