Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday to review the flood situation following Cyclone Fengal, which has impacted 1.5 crore residents across 14 districts. During the discussion, PM Modi assured the state of central assistance to address the challenges posed by the cyclone.

Widespread Damage Reported

Cyclone Fengal has caused significant disruptions in Tamil Nadu, inundating 2.11 lakh hectares of farmland and affecting critical infrastructure. In response, CM Stalin has sought Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to facilitate relief and rehabilitation efforts.

“Given the scale of the destruction, immediate financial assistance is essential to address the situation effectively,” Stalin stated in an official post on X (formerly Twitter).

Relief Measures Initiated

The Chief Minister announced Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia for the families of seven individuals who lost their lives in a landslide caused by heavy rainfall in the Thiruvannamalai district. Official statements expressed condolences and outlined plans for further assistance to affected families.

Weather Forecast for South India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka due to the cyclone’s impact. A low-pressure area is expected to develop over the southeast Arabian Sea, potentially influencing weather patterns in the region.

Coordination Between Centre and State

The Prime Minister’s call emphasized cooperation between the central and state governments in addressing the immediate needs arising from the cyclone. The focus remains on relief distribution, infrastructure repair, and ensuring the safety of affected communities.

Ongoing Efforts

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, deploying resources to manage the impact of the cyclone and provide relief to those affected. Rescue operations and assessments are underway to determine the full extent of the damage.
