New Delhi, November 2, 2024 — In an alarming surge of fire incidents, Delhi Fire Services responded to a record-breaking 720 calls over two days amid Diwali celebrations. On October 31, fire officials received 320 emergency calls, followed by 400 calls on November 1, making this the highest recorded number of fire-related calls within 48 hours, according to Delhi Fire Services Director Atul Garg.

The incidents, spanning multiple causes, included fires from traditional candles and diyas, short circuits from festive lighting, and a few attributed to firecrackers. While Delhi has seen significant fire-related incidents in previous Diwali seasons, this year’s volume far surpassed previous records. “We typically handle around 130 calls due to firecrackers during Diwali, but this year, we saw fewer firecracker-related calls. Most fires were due to other factors, like candles and electrical issues,” Garg stated.

Approximately 100 calls reported fires in garbage piles, sparking concern about public safety and waste management during the festivities. Notably, several major incidents occurred across Delhi, including:

1. Mangolpuri Tent Warehouse Fire: A fire erupted early Friday morning, affecting a Mangolpuri warehouse extending across four floors. Tragically, a woman and two children suffered burns and were hospitalized. Six fire engines were dispatched to control the blaze.
2. Cardboard Factory Fire in Rajdhani Park: Another fire broke out in a cardboard manufacturing facility in Nangloi, posing risks to workers and surrounding areas.
3. DTC Bus Fire in Najafgarh: A DTC bus ignited after a passenger accidentally carried potash, a substance used in firecracker production, onto the vehicle. The incident injured two passengers and prompted immediate response efforts.

Officials stressed the need for increased caution with candles, diyas, and electrical decorations during festivals. Garg advised, “While celebrating, people should remain vigilant with open flames and electrical installations to ensure their safety and the safety of others.”

With Delhi Fire Services stretched to their limits, authorities are urging the public to prioritize fire safety and to be conscious of environmental impacts. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though the sheer volume of incidents underscores the need for heightened awareness and safety practices during festive seasons.
