Over 200 FIRs Filed as Model Code Enforcement Tightens Ahead of Polls
Thane, 8th November 2024: As the Maharashtra assembly elections approach, enforcement actions have intensified across Thane district, where authorities have seized a substantial Rs 13.26 crore worth of liquor, drugs, and freebies since the election code of conduct took effect on October 15. The model code, which restricts inducements in the lead-up to the polls, has seen strict enforcement with over 209 FIRs registered in Thane alone, according to Collector Ashok Shingare.
In a review meeting with Special Observer for Election Expenses B R Balakrishnan, Shingare detailed the district’s vigilance measures and shared key statistics relevant to the Thane electorate. This district, comprising 18 assembly segments, has over 7.2 million registered voters, including a notable number of first-time voters (aged 18-19) and 56,976 senior citizens above 85.
Police Seizure in Mumbai Adds to Election Security Measures
Further amplifying election security, Mumbai police recently seized Rs 2.3 crore in cash from 12 individuals in the Kalbadevi area. Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted the group but received no satisfactory documentation or explanation for the large sum. With the model code in place, police teams are actively monitoring for illicit cash, liquor, and other potential election inducements across Maharashtra. The cash has since been handed over to the Income Tax department for a thorough investigation.
Election Preparations Underway
With the 288-seat Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for November 20 and counting set for November 23, Thane’s election machinery is fully mobilized, deploying over 30,000 personnel to manage the electoral process. The proactive approach in Thane and neighboring districts underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring fair and transparent elections across the state.
