Opposition Slams Frequent Adjournments: “Why Is the Government Afraid of the Word ‘Adani’?”

In a heated winter session of Parliament, opposition leaders criticized the frequent adjournments in both houses, accusing the government of evading accountability on critical issues. With discussions around the Adani Group allegations, the Manipur crisis, and the Sambhal clashes being repeatedly deferred, the opposition called for transparency and urgent dialogue.

Congress MP Randeep Surjewala, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, demanded a full-fledged discussion on corruption linked to the Adani Group. “Why is the government avoiding a debate? Corruption is a national concern. Accountability on issues like Sambhal’s violence and Manipur’s crisis cannot be overlooked,” he said.

Lok Sabha witnessed uproar as Congress MP Karti Chidambaram criticized the adjournments, calling it a failure of parliamentary procedure. “Both Houses are adjourning without meaningful dialogue. The Speaker must prioritize debates on pressing national issues, including the Adani indictment and the Manipur crisis,” he added.

Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also voiced concerns over public grievances being neglected. Highlighting her state’s issues, she remarked, “From unemployment to inflation, Punjab’s water crisis, and university elections—where can I raise these if the House doesn’t function?”

The Lok Sabha was adjourned amid a ruckus over these demands, with Speaker Om Birla deferring proceedings until November 28. The Rajya Sabha faced similar disruptions, echoing calls for discussions on public grievances, violence, and corporate accountability.

The government has yet to address why debates on these significant matters are being delayed, raising questions about the functionality of democratic discourse in the Parliament.
