PM Modi Meets Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Amid Gaza Crisis

New York, September 23, 2024 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in the United States for the UN General Assembly, met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday. During their discussion, Modi expressed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi stated, “Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views on further strengthening our long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine.”

The meeting comes at a critical time as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 41,226 Palestinians have lost their lives and over 95,000 have been injured since the escalation of violence that began after the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, noted that Modi reaffirmed India’s ongoing support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. India advocates for a two-state solution achieved through dialogue and negotiations as the pathway to lasting peace.

Modi’s visit also included a high-profile roundtable with tech CEOs at MIT, showcasing India’s growing prominence in the global tech landscape. As he addresses the Indian-American community later today, the Prime Minister aims to strengthen ties and highlight India’s commitment to innovation and collaboration on the world stage.

With the humanitarian situation in Gaza escalating and tensions remaining high, Modi’s discussions with Abbas underline India’s diplomatic efforts to foster peace in a region plagued by conflict.
