Vote-From-Home: Maharashtra Assembly Elections Initiative.

In an effort to enhance voter participation, the Election Commission of India (EC) has rolled out a vote-from-home facility for senior citizens and disabled voters ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The initiative, aimed at making voting more accessible, is available to those who have submitted the 12D form. The facility will remain in effect until November 16, 2024.

So far, in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill constituency—known for its high-profile voters—268 senior citizens aged over 85 years and 10 disabled voters have taken advantage of the home voting service. The facility has proven to be a significant relief for those unable to reach polling stations due to mobility issues, allowing them to actively participate in the democratic process.

In total, Mumbai city district’s 10 constituencies have 2,137 senior citizens above the age of 85, as well as 219 disabled voters, who can benefit from this service. The EC aims to increase voter turnout, especially among these groups, by eliminating barriers such as physical mobility, which often hinder participation.

The voting for the Maharashtra Assembly elections will take place on November 20, with results expected on November 23. As part of their strategy to increase voter participation, the EC has also introduced polling booths in residential high-rises across Mumbai. This move is part of a broader effort to make voting more convenient and accessible for urban voters, particularly in areas where voter turnout has historically been low, like Malabar Hill and Colaba. To address urban apathy, the EC recently organized special initiatives to encourage citizens from these areas to cast their ballots.

With 1,185 polling stations planned in residential complexes, the EC hopes to boost voter engagement and make the process as seamless as possible for all residents. This initiative comes at a time when concerns over low voter turnout in urban areas have been growing, making this a critical step in ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the election.
