Tamil Nadu is bracing for more challenges as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal strengthens and moves towards the state’s coastline. Rainfall intensified across Tamil Nadu ‘s Chennai and several districts on Tuesday, causing waterlogging and disruptions, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted further intensification into a cyclonic storm over the next 12 hours.
Rainfall and Immediate Impact
Chennai and surrounding areas, including Chengalpet, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and coastal districts such as Cuddalore and Cauvery delta regions, received mild to heavy rainfall. Sheets of water covered major roads, disrupting traffic and normalcy. The IMD has warned of increased rainfall in the coming days, especially in areas around the projected landfall site.
Cyclone Fengal’s Path and Strength
Currently, the depression lies approximately 830 kilometers south-southeast of Chennai and is expected to intensify into a deep depression before transitioning into Cyclone Fengal. Moving north-northwestwards, the system is predicted to make landfall between Chennai and Puducherry in the next two days. Peak intensification may occur shortly before landfall, though some weakening is anticipated prior to its arrival onshore.
Preparing for Landfall
Authorities have been urged to remain on alert as the storm system poses risks of heavy downpours, strong winds, and flooding. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. Urban planning teams are working to address waterlogging concerns and prepare for potential storm surges along the coast.
This weather system marks another in a series of cyclonic activities in the Bay of Bengal, emphasizing the region’s vulnerability during this season. With Cyclone Fengal approaching, Tamil Nadu’s preparedness efforts will be critical in mitigating its impact.
