Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointed as 51st Chief Justice of India, to Succeed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud

Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) following a formal announcement by the President on October 24, 2024. This transition is in line with the convention where the outgoing CJI recommends the second-most senior judge as a successor. Justice Khanna will officially take office as the head of India’s judiciary, succeeding Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retires on November 10. Justice Khanna’s tenure will extend until his retirement on May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna, a distinguished figure in India’s judicial landscape, has held a range of prominent roles, with a judicial career marked by dedication and a reputation for upholding justice. Born on May 14, 1960, he began his legal career in Delhi’s Tis Hazari district courts, later moving to the Delhi High Court and handling various tribunal cases. His elevation to the Delhi High Court in 2005 as an additional judge, and then as a permanent judge in 2006, solidified his position as a respected judicial mind. In 2019, he reached the Supreme Court, where he contributed to several landmark rulings.

During his years on the bench, Justice Khanna has built a reputation as a progressive jurist, focusing on issues of constitutional law, personal freedoms, and human rights. His rulings have underscored his dedication to impartiality and have positioned him as a notable advocate of judicial transparency and accountability.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, the outgoing Chief Justice, has made a substantial impact with landmark rulings on key cases, including the Ram Janmabhoomi land dispute, the electoral bond scheme, and the Sabarimala case.
