MEA Slams Canada for Blocking Australian Channel Covering Jaishankar’s Speech, Calls Out ‘Hypocrisy’

In a recent diplomatic exchange, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) voiced sharp criticism against the Canadian government for blocking an Australian media outlet’s social media presence in Canada. The channel, Australia Today, had broadcast a press conference featuring Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, during which Jaishankar made pointed remarks about Canada’s handling of anti-India elements within its borders.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed surprise and concern over the incident, noting that the Australian channel was blocked shortly after airing Jaishankar’s statements. This action, according to Jaiswal, highlights what he called Canada’s “hypocrisy” when it comes to freedom of speech. The MEA spokesperson remarked, “It looks strange to us… these are actions which yet again highlight the hypocrisy of Canada towards freedom of speech.”

The press conference in Australia allowed Jaishankar to address three significant concerns: Canada’s alleged monitoring of Indian diplomats, the unchecked support for anti-India factions, and repeated, unsubstantiated accusations by Canadian authorities against India. His remarks followed an earlier criticism of Canada’s leniency towards extremist groups, which he said undermines diplomatic relations and jeopardizes the safety of Indian institutions abroad.

This latest controversy marks a peak in rising tensions between India and Canada. The diplomatic row has been escalating in recent months, especially with India’s firm stance on Canada’s responsibility to prevent extremists from targeting Indian communities.
